Department of Radiology, 2nd Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague and Motol University Hospital
Prof. MUDr. Slavoj Věšín, DrSc., one of the doyens of Czech radiology, founded the X-ray department of the University Hospital Motol in 1943. After the building of the children’s part of the University Hospital Motol was opened in 1978, doc. MUDr. Eva Kolihová, CSc became head of the radiodiagnostic department. Under her management this department became one of the prominent centers of pediatric radiology in our country.
The status of the clinic and recent history
Prof. MUDr. Stanislav Tůma, CSc., became head of the radiodiagnostic department in 1990, and he managed to obtain the status of clinic for the department in 1992. The construction of the blue pavilion was completed in 1997, and the Clinic of Imaging Methods, thanks to being equipped with the most modern and efficient instruments, has become a top-level workplace, which at present enables the comprehensive performance of all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on adult and child patients. The head of the clinic for the years 1999 – 2007 was prof. MUDr. Jiří Neuwirth, CSc.. Prof. MUDr. Miloslav Roček, CSc., has been head of the Clinic of Imaging Methods since October 2007.
The Clinic of Imaging Methods performs more than 250,000 examinations per year. In addition to common X-ray and ultrasonic devices, we have three magnetic resonance devices and two modern CT devices at our disposal, one of which is capable of a high-quality examination of heart and arteries. Furthermore, our clinic performs a wide range of interventions under X-ray monitoring.
Tradition of treating child patients
Due to the historical focus of the University Hospital Motol on child patients, our clinic employs highly knowledgeable and experienced professionals who work in the field of pediatric radiology. Thanks to them our clinic serves as a consulting department for child oncology patients, children with congenital developmental disorders and other childhood and neonatal diseases.
Kidney diagnoses in children
In cooperation with the nephrological department of the Pediatrics Clinic I, we perform complex ultrasonographic diagnoses of complications following transplantations of the kidneys.
We are specialists in child interventional radiology
Our clinic maintains a close collaboration with the center for diagnostic-rehabilitative treatment of swallowing disorders at our ENT workplace. In the area of interventional radiology, we perform treatment of strictures and stenoses of the esophagus and trachea by means of balloon dilatation at the pediatric part of the clinic.
We also perform interventional surgeries on the peripheral arteries and venous system. Endovascular surgeries include implantations of stentgrafts (endovascular prostheses) into the thoracic and abdominal aortas, interventions at hemodialyzing vascular entries, balloon dilatations of crus aortas, recanalizations of long arterial closures by means of subintimal recanalization, treatment of chronic central venous closures and chemoembolizations. In addition to vascular interventions we also perform non-vascular interventions, especially on the biliary tract and the hollow system of the kidneys. We also perform interventions on the heart in cooperation with the Cardiovascular Center.
