FN Motol is among the best in Europe in spinal operations

Prague, April 19, 2023 – The Department of Spondylosurgery of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the UK and Motol General Hospital is a highly specialized workplace, characterized by modern diagnostic and treatment methods. Recently, it received the most prestigious award in its field – European accreditation, thus ranking among the top workplaces in Europe.

Spondylosurgery, or spine surgery, is a medical field on the border between orthopedics, neurosurgery and from the point of view of operative approaches and general surgery. He is dedicated to the surgical as well as conservative treatment of spine diseases. The most frequently treated diagnosis is degenerative disease of the cervical and lumbar spine, followed by injuries, tumors, inflammations and deformities. Currently, the field of spondylosurgery is an extension field to the basic fields of orthopedics and neurosurgery with its own attestation. In the Czech Republic, spine operations are performed at 25 workplaces, some only partially. In total, approximately 15 operations are performed at all workplaces per year.

"The clinic of spondylosurgery of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the UK and the Motol FN is unique in the entire country, we are dedicated exclusively to spine surgery and that in full, including the most complex diagnoses in which we specialize. The clinic has thirteen specialized doctors who devote all their energy and skill to spine surgery. And that is truly unique not only here, but also in Europe," says prof. MD Jan Štulík, CSc., head of the Department of Spondylosurgery of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the University of Warsaw and the Motol Medical University.

Specialization brings significant profit for patients. The benefit lies in the increased safety of the operation, the control mechanisms meet the strictest European standards, which lead to a reduction in possible complications. The clinic operates over 1500 patients a year, and many operations are already routine.

European accreditation in the field of spondylosurgery is a prestigious award for many years of activity. The certificate is awarded by Eurospine - Spine Society of Europe, which brings together spine experts focusing on clinical care and research. Accreditation is an evaluation of long-term standard work. For patients, it is confirmation that they have chosen the right workplace and that they will be cared for at the highest possible level. The clinic guarantees patients that they will be treated by erudite experts, leaders in the field of spine surgery, according to the most modern knowledge and procedures.

"It is a great honor for the entire team of our spondylosurgery clinic and for the hospital as a whole. Obtaining accreditation means higher prestige in domestic and foreign professional societies and brings documented information about the quality of the workplace by an independent assessor. In addition, we obtained accreditation in the entire range of spondylosurgery, i.e. injuries, inflammations, tumors, degeneration, deformities. European accreditation is a clear signal to colleagues and laypeople that medicine is practiced here at the highest possible level. There are very few such workplaces in Europe now, around thirty," Professor Štulík further explains and adds: "Many thanks go to the capable managers who took on the main task and guided us through the accreditation process with ease, as well as to the entire team of doctors and nurses for the long-term standard high-quality work."
