Basic information

Clinic rehabilitation and sports medicine of the 2nd Medical Faculty of Charles University and the University Hospital Motol consists of 4 separate departments:
- Adult and child rehabilitation
- Spinal unit
- Department of Sports Medicine
- Center for research and treatment of painful conditions
The Rehabilitation Clinic provides physiotherapy and medical rehabilitation to adult and pediatric patients in its entirety across all medical disciplines.
We provide care to outpatients (adult and pediatric wards) and hospitalized patients (at individual clinics and wards of the adult and pediatric wards of the hospital). The clinic includes an acute inpatient rehabilitation care department.
The department specializes in the following issues:
- respiratory physiotherapy, which is one of the dominant activities of the clinic and has been developed here for a long time. It is used in both adult and pediatric patients (pulmonary and systemic diseases, therapy of patients registered in the CF center at the FN in Motola, post-operative conditions, lung transplantation)
- treatment of spasticity, including the application of botulinum toxin
- therapy of pelvic floor disorders
- therapy of vestibular disorders
- visceral rehabilitation
- swallowing disorders
- consultation room for amputee patients
There are also other special programs at the clinic. Severe forms of cerebral palsy are assessed at interdisciplinary seminars of a super-conciliar nature (intended for patients under 18 years of age from all over the Czech Republic). The clinic also participates in the monitoring and therapy of pathological newborns, patients with hereditary neuropathy.
The diagnostic and therapeutic concept of Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization, which is based on the principles of developmental kinesiology, was developed and put into practice at the clinic. The founder of this concept is the head of the clinic prof. Wheeler. The department participates in teaching this concept in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Ambulance
Patients are available for outpatient clinic records and only on the basis of recommendations. Each outpatient is first examined by a rehabilitation doctor and then he is referred to a physiotherapist who starts his own rehabilitation according to the doctor's rehabilitation plan. Unfortunately, our outpatient capacities are limited, within the superconsulting assessment of the finding.
Adult part
The adult ambulance is located at node D minus the first floor (D -1).
Until the end of 2023, due to capacity reasons, the intake of new patients in the outpatient section is significantly limited.
All patients who are currently under the care of the rehabilitation clinic can continue to make appointments for follow-up examinations.

Bed ward for pediatric patients
The specialized hospital workplace opened on 15 May 2019 is intended for the rehabilitation of children with impaired motor functions after the treatment of neurological, internal and orthopedic diseases and after operations or injuries in the phase when rehabilitation has a dominant role in treatment. A new inpatient department for acute rehabilitation was established as part of the Department of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine of the 2nd Medical Faculty of Charles University and the Motol University Hospital, and it is the first workplace of this type in the Czech healthcare environment.
The Department of Acute Pediatric Rehabilitation has a capacity of 16 beds and is located on the third floor of the children's section of the Motol University Hospital. It is equipped with special rehabilitation aids and medical devices that are necessary for the effective treatment of children hospitalized here.
"We want to make maximum use of the rehabilitation potential in the early stages after trauma, surgery and in other acute conditions, so that functional motor skills and self-sufficiency improve as much as possible," says prof. PaedDr. Pavel Kolář, Ph.D., head of the Department of Rehabilitation and Physical Education Medicine of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of the University of Warsaw and the Motol University of Applied Sciences. The world-renowned physiotherapist has been dealing with children's movement pathology since the beginning of his career and is the author of the diagnostic and therapeutic concept "Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization" (DNS), which is based on the elementary principles of human motility.
In addition to acute care for pediatric patients, the department will also focus on patients in the chronic stage.
In these children, the effect and results of previous rehabilitation treatment will be assessed during hospitalization. New physiotherapeutic, occupational therapy or speech therapy procedures will then be modified or adjusted as needed.
The great advantage of the new department is especially the connection of children's rehabilitation to the specialized specialties of the hospital, ie orthopedics, neurology, pediatrics, etc. to superconsulting examinations. The department is used to teach medical students, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and postgraduate teaching.

Clinical speech therapy
The Department of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine of the 2nd Medical Faculty of Charles University and the Motol University Hospital also offers its patients speech therapy care. Clinical speech therapists at the Motol University Hospital deal with impaired communication skills in children and adults, swallowing disorders, cognitive-communication deficits and care for adult patients with hearing impairments, especially hearing rehabilitation in patients after cochlear implantation. Speech therapy takes place both in inpatient departments and in the form of outpatient speech therapy care, including regular group therapies for people with aphasia or cognitive-communication deficits.

From 1/7/2022 there is a section Clinical speech therapy at the Clinic of Rehabilitation and Physical Education Medicine 2.LF UK and FN Motol by an accredited MZČR workplace. As part of the education of speech therapists in pre-certification preparation, it offers internships in both inpatient and outpatient sections as part of basic training and specialized training.
Speech therapy care at FN Motol is provided across a wide spectrum of diagnoses for both children and adults. Within the adult section, speech therapy care is most often provided at Clinic of rehabilitation and physical education medicineknows 2.LF UK and FN Motol, Neurological Clinic 2.LF UK and FN Motol and then on a consultative basis at the Spinal Unit, Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery 1. Equipment of the device
In the treatment of adult and pediatric patients, we use devices such as the WalkAide neurostimulator, the RehaWalk dynamic walkway with virtual reality for analysis and therapy of gait stereotype disorders, the Balance-Master system for diagnosis and treatment of stability disorders, the Pablo system for upper limb therapy and hand gripping functions.
Apparatus for physical therapy enables electrostimulation, application of electroanalgesic currents, ultrasound, laser, pulsed magnetic field, vacuum-compression therapy, lymphatic drainage, shock waves.
The clinic also includes an electrophysiological laboratory, in which electromyographic examinations are performed. There is also a sonographic device used to examine the musculoskeletal system and navigational injections, including botulinum toxin treatment.
History
The history of the rehabilitation clinic dates back to 1962, when the Department of Physical Medicine (at the Department of Pediatrics FDL) was established, within which rehabilitation was developed, which at that time did not exist as a separate field. At that time, prof. V. Vojta, who developed the rehabilitation of children with DMO. An independent central rehabilitation department was established only after the children's clinic was moved to Motol in 1969. This rehabilitation department was headed for almost 20 years by prof. MUDr. M. Máček, who introduced physiotherapy of respiratory diseases at the clinic, which he met during his study stay in France. The Department of Rehabilitation was officially founded on June 1, 6 and doc. MUDr. J. Javůrek DrSc, who previously headed the rehabilitation department. From 1988 to 1992 he managed the clinic prof. MUDr. M. Kučera and in 1999 prof. PaedDr. Pavel Kolar, Ph.D.
Leaflets and brochures
We do not recommend using the methodological procedures listed in the leaflets and brochures without prior consultation with a physiotherapist, occupational therapist or clinical speech therapist.
The leaflets are a supplement to the individual therapies (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy) taking place at Motol Medical Center.
