Department of Ophthalmology for Children and Adults, 2nd Medical Faculty, Charles University and University Hospital Motol

Basic information

The Department of Ophthalmology for Children and Adults, Charles University, 2nd Medical Faculty and Motol University Hospital in Prague provides medical and preventive care in the field of ophthalmology in the entire age range from birth to late senile age. Especially in the field of pediatric ophthalmology, the clinic operates as a superconsulting workplace with a long tradition and in the context of the largest children's hospital in the Czech Republic, it is also a center of rich interdisciplinary cooperation.

In 2005, a 5-year effort to introduce screening for congenital cataracts in the Czech Republic as part of the NPV MZČR project culminated. Complex care for children with congenital cataracts (principal investigator Doc. MUDr. A. Filouš, CSc.). The neonatology departments of more than 100 maternity hospitals in the Czech Republic were gradually equipped to carry out screening, including a methodological sheet, and examination became mandatory for every newborn. We organized practical training on the equipment of the red reflex in the pupil of a newborn for representatives of all neonatology departments in close cooperation with the Neonatal Department with JIRP FN Motol. The majority of newborns with congenital cataracts are sent for surgery and subsequent long-term comprehensive care at the Children's and Adult Eye Clinic of the Motol Medical Center, where the project continues to improve treatment procedures. In this way, we not only fulfill the requirements of the EU, where screening for congenital cataracts is recommended in a number of countries, but also one of the priorities of the WHO Vision 2020 initiative aimed at eliminating recoverable blindness.

The doctor of the Eye Clinic for Children and Adults also provides the EMERGENCY SERVICE for acute conditions (eye injuries, acute eye pain, sudden deterioration of vision) for both children and adults, outside normal outpatient hours, on weekdays from 15:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. the following day, 24 hours a day on weekends and holidays. Information can be obtained from the Central Reception for Adults - tel. 224 436 767, or from the Central Reception for Children 224 433 653 during the specified hours.
