Characteristics of the institute
The Institute of Biology and Medical Genetics is a clinical-diagnostic university and research department. Our main objective is the diagnosis and study of hereditary diseases, including tumorous diseases on the level of genes and chromosomes in the prenatal and postnatal area. Our employees teach Czech and foreign students of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague biology and clinical and molecular genetics. They also participate in teaching at the University of the Third Age.
Structure of the institute
The Institute of Biology and Medical Genetics is a medical education department. The education part is represented by the Department of Biology and Medical Genetics. The medical part consists of the Department of Clinical Genetics (out-patient part) and individual laboratories, i.e., the Department of Medical Cytogenetics, Center for Cystic Fibrosis, and the Department of Molecular Genetics. The laboratory part, including the Department of Biology, is situated on the 4th Floor of Building G. The out-patient part of the institute is situated in pavilion 22. The medical part is supplemented by the Center for Reproductive Genetics, which is situated in the new building D on the 3rd Floor.

Our institute focuses mainly on the treatment and research of hereditary oncological diseases, neurogenetics – particularly muscle diseases, ataxy, the issues of mental retardation and autism, syndromes of chromosomal instability, microdeletion syndromes in neurology and cardiology, familiar and syndromatic growth disorders, genodermatoses, hearing impairments and rare tumorous diseases.
