Why did it happen?

Why did it all happen? And why us?

Your child is not the first or the only one to be diagnosed with cancer. Annually in the Czech Republic, cancer or leukemia about 350 children.

The cause of childhood tumors is not known in 90% of cases and it is definitely not the place of self-blame or finding the culprit.

Childhood tumors and leukemias are caused by a number of factors that together lead to a change (so-called mutation) in genetic information in a healthy cell of the human body. The mutation causes the originally healthy cell to start multiplying uncontrollably, so-called tumor growth.

The result of tumor growth is the formation of a tumor mass of a certain organ or the development of leukemia. In both cases, the cancer progresses rapidly, oppressing the surrounding healthy tissues or hematopoietic cells. It can spread to more distant parts of the human body and establish distant foci, so-called metastases.

Our team of scientists in specialized laboratories also pays close attention to the causal factors that cause childhood leukemia or cancer in childhood.

"Double hit theory" In the emergence of leukemia and the existence of the so-called preleukemic clone, there are only some of the findings of our and the world's laboratories, which reveal the way in which childhood acute leukemia develops.

However, we still do not know exactly carcinogenic factors in pediatric hematooncology. And so, unfortunately, even in the second decade of the new millennium, we are unable to answer the parents of our patients to their most frequently asked question, "Why our child?"
