The Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic provides care in the entire field of cardiac surgery.
The scope of the workplace is:
- ischemic heart disease surgery - myocardial revascularization
- surgery of the whole spectrum of acquired valve defects - valve sculptures and prostheses
- surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation (MAZE)
- thoracic aortic surgery including stent graft implantation
- congenital heart defects in adulthood
- minimally invasive videothoracoscopic heart surgery (VATS)
- surgical treatment of infectious endocarditis
- Surgery for ischemic heart disease (coronary artery bypass grafting), including complete arterial revascularization and extracorporeal circulation surgery
- Surgery of the whole spectrum of acquired valve defects with maximum emphasis on conservation operations (plastics) of the mitral and aortic valves
- Implantation of human valve allografts into the aortic position, especially in infectious endocarditis (performed at our ward for the first time in our country in 1994), Ross surgery (pulmonary autotransplantation into the aortic position in younger patients and infectious endocarditis with complications - first performed in our ward in 1995).
- Surgical treatment of heart failure
- Treatment of thoracic aorta diseases, including stent graft implantation
- Surgical treatment of congenital heart defects in adulthood
- Surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation (MAZE)
- Use of less invasive methods in cardiac surgery
- A minithoracotomy was performed at the Department of Cardiac Surgery for the first time in the country for both atrial defect closure (1995) and mammary coronary artery bypass grafting (I / 1996).
- Vascular surgery in its entirety, including treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms, peripheral artery disease and dialysis approaches
Video-assisted cardiac procedures
In 2007, we launched the program minimally invasive videothoracoscopic cardiac surgery (VATS).
Using cameras and special tools we repair whether we replace flaps a we close the open partitions of the atrial septum.
We penetrate the intercostal space to the heart and it is therefore not necessary to split the sternum as in normal surgery.
The advantage over conventional operations is:
- significantly smaller surgical wound
- less operational load
- faster healing
- better cosmetic effect
We are the only workplace in Praguethat performs this type of operation.
Endoscopic collection of venous grafts
In September 2008, we launched an endoscopic venous graft collection program. The veins are designed to bridge the damaged coronary artery in the heart, the so-called bypass. The new procedure is much more patient-friendly.
The advantage over conventional operations is:
- significant reduction in the incidence of wound healing disorders
- minimal postoperative pain
- faster rehabilitation of patients
After the completion of the new building of the teaching hospital in 1997, the department was gradually equipped and now uses 2 halls of the central hall complex, with the septic operating room sharing other operating rooms. It has a 12-bed intensive care unit and an intermediate and standard unit with a flexible bed ratio.
The ward consists of an intensive care unit (ICU), an intermediate care ward (IMP) and two standard wards. The ICU offers a capacity of 12 beds. the ratio of IMP to standard beds is flexible. The department is located in the wing "C" FN Motol. ICU and IMP on the lower ground floor (-P). Part of the capacity of the standard department is located in the vicinity of the IMP (-P), the remaining beds in 1st floor of the wing "B" (vascular department).
Operating rooms
The workplace has 2 modern and fully equipped halls in the central hall complex. It uses the so-called septic room to perform selected vascular procedures, which is shared with the surgery of orthopedics and general surgery clinics.
Social activities of clinics and doctors
In addition to the Czech Society of Cardiovascular Surgery and the Czech Society of Cardiology, cardiac surgeons are members of the European Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and attend their meetings annually.
We deal with surgery for ischemic heart disease (myocardial revascularization) and surgery for the entire spectrum of acquired valve defects (valve plastic surgery and prostheses). We provide a complete range of vascular surgery, including endovascular treatment of peripheral arteries, abdominal aorta, aortic arch and extracranial arteries.

The Department of Cardiac Surgery for Adult Patients was founded by a team of doctors and nurses from the Children's Cardiac Center under the leadership Doc. MUDr. Tomáš Hoňek, CSc. in 1993. Creation of a cardioanesthesiology group under the leadership Doc. MUDr. Karel Cvachovec, CSc. and the establishment of the surgical part of the human valve allograft bank with nationwide scope enabled the erudition of the founders and efficient multi-source financing (from the hospital reserves, subsidies and grants from the Ministry of Health and from the donation). Dr. Jaroslav Stark, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London).
In 1997, the workplace moved to the final premises in the new building of the Motol University Hospital.
In 2003, he became the head of the clinic MUDr. Petr Pavel, CSc, under his leadership, a team of cardiac surgeons, intensivists and cardiologists performed around 900 cardiac surgeries per year, which was the second highest number in Prague after IKEM. At this time, a vascular surgery program was launched at the workplace.
In 2006, the workplace is reorganized. The clinic is transformed into the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery as part of the Cardiovascular Center for Adult Patients and its head is appointed Prof. MUDr. Ivan Vanek, DrSc. Operations in the entire range of cardiac surgery and vascular surgery are performed at the workplace. The department provides round-the-clock service for patients with cardiovascular disease.
In 2008, he became the head of the department Doc. MUDr. Marek Setina, CSc. Launches a program of mini-invasive videothoracoscopically assisted heart surgery. The department regains the status of the Clinic. The department significantly expands the operation of vascular surgical patients, cooperates with the Children's Cardiac Center of the Motol University Hospital in solving congenital heart defects in adulthood and profiles itself in the surgical treatment of patients with infectious endocarditis. An outpatient clinic for congenital child defects in adulthood is established.
In 2012, the workplace is renamed with a new official name - Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, 2nd Medical Faculty, Charles University and University Hospital Motol - characterizing both main programs of the clinic, ie cardiac surgery and vascular surgery. The clinic also participates in the lung transplant program and provides a kidney transplant program for children under the age of 18. Provides consular vascular surgical and angiological care for pediatric patients. He prepares human valve allografts for the tissue bank of the Motol Transplant Center.
In 2013, he became the new head of the clinic Doc. MUDr. William Rohn, CSc. In addition to standard cardiac surgery and vascular surgery, a program of videothoracoscopically assisted cardiac surgery and cooperation with the Children's Cardiac Center in dealing with congenital heart defects in adulthood is also being developed. Undergraduate teaching of medics is extended by teaching of the 5th year within the new subject Cardiovascular Medicine (in cooperation with the Department of Cardiology, University Hospital Motol).
