When did you decide to become a nurse and who or what gave you the idea?
Probably already in childhood. My grandfather had diabetes mellitus, he had to inject insulin, weigh his food and go to check-ups by ambulance. My parents wanted me to be a telephone operator and a children's nurse. I didn't want either, but I could imagine caring for adult patients.

Bc. Kristina HolanováDo you remember your first working day at FNM?
I remember. The first morning service was very long, I saw children with congenital heart defects after surgery. It was an incredible feeling. You see a small ventilated patient with many tubes leading from it. I thought to myself: “I was not taught anything from what I saw in school. I will learn it?"

You work at the Children's Cardiocenter of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of the UK and Motol Medical Center. What brought you to this field?
Neighbor. I wanted to join adult ICU surgery, but they didn't take female graduates there. Dana Macháčová, one of the station nurses of the Specialized Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery (SPPKK), lived in our house. Dana introduced me to the post-op unit and I joined in 1993. I still work here today, only the name of the workplace has changed to the Children's Cardio Center JIRP.

Bc. Kristina HolanováWhat is your typical work day like at the Children's Cardio Center?
In the intensive care and resuscitation unit, we provide highly specialized care for patients with heart disease. I get to know the children's patients and, in cooperation with the doctors, we arrange translations to the standard department. I ensure the operation of the department - my daily work is the same and at the same time different every time, it depends on the condition of our patients. Due to the resuscitation ICU, the situation here changes every moment. We are the only children's cardio center in the Czech Republic and we also have to take into account unplanned income. Cooperation with the DKC standard department, other clinics at Motol General Hospital and children's departments throughout the Czech Republic is very important. Simply put, my work consists in communication, ensuring the running of the department, services, solving stressful situations. I am glad that at FN Motol we have interventions and peer support. Sometimes I have a calm day and sometimes I don't know if we can all make it.

What qualities and prerequisites do you think a person who decides to work in healthcare should have?
Should be determined to work in healthcare and want to work, be truthful.

Can you remember a patient who pleased or amused you the most?
I was amused by a four-year-old girl who wanted to play a cooking game on her tablet.

How do you relax, what do you think is the best rest?
I don't rest much, but I rest the most when working in the garden.

What was your biggest childhood dream?
I wanted to become a florist, a gardener.

Bc. Kristina HolanováDo you have a guaranteed recipe for stress management?
I don't have a guaranteed recipe. Sometimes a fast drive helps, other times an ice cream sundae.

When was the last time you laughed heartily?
Yesterday. I like to laugh and often.

Is there someone who is your inspiration in life?
I don't have just one person who has inspired me, and I hope there will be someone who inspires me in the future.
