Basic information
The Department of Pediatric Surgery of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of the University of Warsaw and the Motol Medical University focuses on abdominal, thoracic (except cardiac surgery) and urology operations. We are the highest specialized workplace in the Czech Republic focused on abdominal and thoracic surgery in children. The most common newborn diagnoses include congenital defects of the GIT (esophageal atresia, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, omphalocele, Hirschsprung's disease), urinary tract, cystic lung malformations. We also provide post-operative care for oncology patients. As part of the trauma center status, we provide acute post-traumatic care. At the same time, the clinic is a Sub-Department of Pediatric Surgery of the IPVZ and participates in the undergraduate study of surgery of students of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University and partly of students of the 1st Faculty of Medicine.

Dear parents of our small patients, for a better orientation in the system of the outpatient department of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, we would like to present you with instructions on how to proceed upon arrival at our hospital:
- Patients who come to our clinic for the first time, even with a recommendation from their district doctor, will go to the Emergency Intake Department with their acute and non-acute health problem, lower ground floor E of the children's polyclinic, where a doctor - surgeon is present in an acute surgical clinic.
The office hours of this ambulance are from 8 °° - 14 °° hours on Mon - Thu, from 8 °° - 13 °° hours on Fridays. After office hours, there is only an emergency service.
Be sure to report to the emergency department upon arrival at the Emergency Receipt.
- Patients who come for check-up after surgery or after surgical treatment, after hospitalization at our clinic and ordered to specialist outpatient clinics will go to ground floor E of the children's polyclinic, where there are outpatient clinics for pediatric surgery, general and specialized.
- After entering the ground floor, print out a ticket with a serial number and register in the file. Then wait in the waiting room in front of the ward or in the hallway in front of the ambulances and wait for the invitation to enter the ambulance. Your serial number and the number of the relevant ambulance will appear on the calling device.

One-day surgery - hospitalization
What does the term one-day surgery mean?
The term one-day surgery / hospitalization refers to operations of the most common diseases, which do not require another several days in the hospital after the operation. The stay in the hospital will therefore take place in the mode: reception in the morning, then surgery, in the evening in the optimal state of discharge. Depending on the clinical course and the parents' wishes, the pediatric patient can, of course, continue to be hospitalized until the next day.
What diseases are suitable for one-day surgery?
In the one-day surgery regime, it is possible to operate on the most common surgical diseases - umbilical and inguinal hernia, water hernia, undescended testicles, narrowed foreskin, skin marks, etc.
Which children can undergo surgery in one-day surgery?
With the consent of a pediatrician, it is possible, with the consent of a pediatrician, to order children older than 12 months, generally healthy, without associated diseases, in terms of anesthesiological classification ASA 1.
How can you order the operation?
We will order you for the operation after an examination at the pediatric surgery clinic No. 1 on the lower ground floor of the children's section of the Motol University Hospital. Ambulance office hours are 8-15: 00 Mon-Fri. During office hours, with a recommendation from a pediatrician, you can come at any time without an order, but better after a previous order on the number 224433749, 224433750 daily between 8-9: 00.
Before the examination at the outpatient clinic, it is always necessary to register in the patient records of the children's section of the Motol University Hospital - lowered ground floor (for children's emergency rooms).
Hospitalization for one-day surgery
Where to find us?
In the children's section of FN Motol on the lower ground floor, you will find an outpatient clinic pediatric surgery. The children are then hospitalized on the 2nd floor of wards 2A and 2C

How to prepare?
Last meal - light dinner - the evening of the day before the operation, breastfed children last milk at 5 am, artificial milk 4 am
Last drink - tea only - last at 6.00 am on the day of the operation

What to take to the hospital?
A) Documentation: preoperative examination by a pediatrician and your signed consents for surgery, anesthesia and hospitalization
B) Medicines, which the child enjoys permanently
C) Personal items:

Further: slippers, pajamas, towel
Food and drink: will receive during hospitalization, in the case of a special diet regimen in agreement with the doctor and nurse
The child can take with him at his own risk: book, magazine, favorite toy, mobile phone, PC - notebook.

Specialization
In addition to the service of general pediatric surgery for part of the Prague districts, the department specializes in:
Neonatal surgery, thoracic surgery, proctology, oncosurgery, urology, polytrauma surgery. Every year, 3.000 pediatric patients are admitted to the clinic and 2.000 operations are performed. The clinic is the only workplace in the Czech Republic that has a separate department of neonatal surgery and annually operates around 100 surgically ill newborns. The clinic operates the vast majority of pediatric patients from the Czech Republic in the field of thoracic surgery (chest deformities, lung resection, esophageal atresia, mediastinal tumors). In the field of thoracic surgery, new surgical procedures were introduced using state-of-the-art instruments (thoracoscope and laser). Thanks to the cooperation with the Department of Pediatric Oncology, which concentrates the majority of pediatric patients with solid tumors from the Czech Republic, the workplace has gained experience in operations for solid tumors of the chest, abdomen and retroperitoneum. The workplace is the only one in the Czech Republic that deals with liver surgery in children. In the field of urology, the largest number of patients are children with congenital malformations of the urogenital tract, functional disorders of the bladder and obstructive uropathy. In cooperation with the First Children's Clinic, urologists are involved in kidney transplantation in children. Another specialization of the workplace is the surgical treatment of congenital intestinal aganglionosis (Hirschsprung's disease) and anorectal and cloacal malformations. Together with the Department of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation, the department focuses on the issue of severely polytraumatized children. Since 2006, we have been performing inverted chest corrections in suitable patients using the mini-invasive technique according to Nuss.
During operations, we use the most modern techniques - laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, laser, argon coagulation, ultrasonic tissue aspirator.

 | The Department of Pediatric Surgery has a tradition that dates back to the opening of the Czech Children's Hospital in 1902. The first head of pediatric surgery and orthopedics was MUDr. Vaclav Kafka the Elder (1869 - 1946). He became the chief of pediatric surgery in 1903 and was continuously so for 36 years, i.e. until 1939. He tried to cultivate pediatric surgery to its full extent as was common in those years.  | Another advantage is prof. MUDr. Vaclav Kafka, DrSc. Jr. (1902 - 1991). During his tenure, the Faculty of Pediatrics was established in 1953, and the Department of Pediatric Surgery became the Clinic of Pediatric Surgery. Prof. Kafka focused mainly on pediatric urology and was at the birth of pediatric cardiac surgery. Thoracic surgery and abdominal surgery were developed at the clinic under his leadership. |
 | In 1968, prof. Kafka retired and becomes headmaster prof. MUDr. Vaclav Tosovsky, DrSc. (1912-2007). The main interest of prof. Tošovský's was pediatric bone traumatology, congenital defects of the gastrointestinal system and sudden abdominal events in childhood. At the same time, children with congenital hydrocephalus were treated at the clinic. During his tenure, the pediatric oncology department was separated from the pediatric surgery clinic, which later changed to the pediatric oncology clinic and under the leadership of Prof. MUDr. Josef Koutecký, DrSc. has become one of the largest pediatric oncology clinics in Europe.
