Esophageal and gastric surgery program

The esophagus and stomach surgery program has a long tradition at our clinic developed by several generations of surgeons.

The number of performed operations and the range of diagnoses is III. surgical clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the University of Warsaw and the Motol General Hospital, the largest high-volume center in the Czech Republic.

In 2022, we became the only center in the Czech Republic to use DaVinci Xi robotic technology for esophageal resections.

On March 4, 3, the first complete Robotically Assisted Esophageal Resection with Stomach Replacement in the Czech Republic was performed at our clinic.

We provide care to patients with malignant and benign diseases of the esophagus and stomach.

For malignant tumors, we perform the entire spectrum of resection and reconstructive surgical procedures.

From benign diagnoses, we provide surgical treatment for reflux disease of the esophagus, all types of diaphragmatic hernias, esophageal achalasia and esophageal diverticula.

The program includes acute care for patients with perforation of the esophagus or stomach who require an urgent surgical solution, care for patients with burns of the upper digestive tract with the possibility of reconstructive surgery.

We centralize the care of these patients from all over the Czech Republic.

Initially, we provide care for patients in the ambulatory segment, in special and endoscopic outpatient clinics. After confirming the diagnosis, we will discuss the solution options with the patient and, taking into account the patient's preference, we will indicate a surgical solution. For all malignant diseases, we consider treatment options during a multidisciplinary team meeting. We cooperate with a number of specialized workplaces dealing with this issue, and as a tertiary center we deal with surgical complications after esophageal and stomach operations sent from other workplaces from all over the Czech Republic.

The most common minimally invasive and open procedures:

  • resection of the esophagus with reconstruction of the stomach, small and large intestine for malignant and benign diagnoses
  • perforation and cauterization of the esophagus
  • resection procedures of the stomach, including multi-organ resections
  • operation of all types of diaphragmatic hernias and reflux diseases of the esophagus
  • reoperation of patients with complications after antireflux operations
  • esophageal achalasia surgery
  • esophageal diverticulum surgery
  • diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including stent implantation

We have open, minimally invasive – laparoscopic and videothoracoscopic and robotic options for surgical techniques, including the possibility of using the ICG visualization method (image of blood perfusion of organs or detection of sentinel lymph nodes).
