Pneumo-Oncosurgery Center Motol FN – Center for highly specialized care of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic
Thoracic surgery is one of the basic programs that make up the identity of our workplace.
The clinic is the only center with Accreditation for Thoracic Surgery II. degrees in the Czech Republic.
A study stay at the clinic and an exam passed there is a prerequisite for the award of the Professional specialization in the field of thoracic surgery.
The clinic has the status of a Pneumocosurgical Center of highly specialized care granted by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic.
In 2020, we were the only center in the Czech Republic to use DaVinci Xi robotic technology for lung and thymus operations.
In 2022, we obtained the status of "Case observation center in robotic assisted lung surgery" as the only center in the Czech Republic and Central and Eastern Europe.
The clinic performs all procedures in the field of surgery for malignant and benign diseases of the lungs, airways, pleura, chest wall and mediastinum:
- Full lung resection (wedge resection/segmentectomy/lobectomy/ pneumonectomy/sleeve resection, double sleeve resection, extended resection - chest wall, diaphragm, great vessels, pericardium, heart atrium and spine
- Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) lung and pleural surgery
- Robotically assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) – Da-Vinci Xi device (the only workplace in the Czech Republic and V4 countries)
- Lung transplantation (the only workplace in the Czech Republic and Slovakia)
- Heart-lung block transplantation (in cooperation with IKE, the only workplace in the Czech Republic and Slovakia)
- Resection and bronchoplastic procedures on the tracheobronchial tree (surgical treatment of tracheal stenosis, benign and malignant tracheo- or broncho-oesophageal fistulas)
- LVRS (Lung Volume Reduction Surgery) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Surgery for malignant pleural mesothelioma: extended pleurectomy/decortication (within multimodal therapy)
- Pleurectomy
- Lung decortication
- Surgical lung biopsy (open/mini-invasive)
- Pleuroscopy
- Chest wall resection and reconstruction (in collaboration with plastic surgeons)
- Surgery of the mediastinum (interthorax): mediastinoscopy, biopsy and resection of tumors of the mediastinum
- Diaphragmatic hernia surgery
- Surgical treatment of mediastinal or lung cysts or sequestrations
- Surgery of congenital lung defects
- Surgical treatment of chest deformities
- Thymectomy (surgical removal of the thymus gland) including VATS/RATS mini-invasive approach
- Surgical treatment of diseases of the diaphragm
- Pulmonary artery embolization
- ECMO in all configurations
- Transbronchial biopsy and cryobiopsy
As part of the program, we centralize from all over the Czech Republic and specialize in the following services:
- Surgery of advanced lung cancer – T4N0-1 with the necessity of resection of the superior vena cava, left atrium, chest wall, spine.
- Utilization of extracorporeal circulation and ECMO in thoracic surgery
- VATS – video-assisted thoracic surgery – lung resection and thymectomy
- RATS – robotically assisted thoracic surgery (the only workplace in the Czech Republic) – DaVinci Xi system
- Tracheal and respiratory tract surgery (tracheal resection, tracheal bifurcation, tracheal plastic surgery)
- Surgery of the mediastinum (interthorax) in full: mediastinoscopy, biopsy, thymectomy including a minimally invasive approach (VATS and RATS) or removal of advanced tumors of the mediastinum with resection of large vessels, lungs and spine
- Mesothelioma surgery – extrapleural pneumonectomy with resection of the diaphragm and pericardium, pleurectomy/decortication
- Surgical treatment of congenital developmental defects of the lungs and chest deformities
- Surgical treatment of diseases of the diaphragm
- Development and application of biodegradable airway stents
- As part of the program, a multidisciplinary Laryngotrachealnicentrum was established at the FN Motol
