NeuRx Diaphragm Stimulation System Implantation Program

The program was launched on 8 November 11 with the first successful implantation of a diaphragm stimulation system in the Czech Republic in a patient with a high spinal cord lesion. The procedure was performed using a minimally invasive technique laparoscopically under the guidance of Professor Raymond Onders of University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Ohio.

The program is part of a project in which a team of experts from the Spinal Unit at the Clinic of Rehabilitation and Physical Education Medicine and the Clinic of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine, UK and FN in Motola participate.

The introduction of a diaphragm stimulation system is indicated for these diagnosesoz:

  • cervical spinal cord lesions
  • amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • other neurodegenerative diseases

The NeuRx Diaphragm Stimulation System method was used to stimulate the phrenic nerve®. The device enables a physiological pattern of breathing using negative intrathoracic pressure, can partially or fully replace a ventilator, eliminate especially respiratory complications associated with ventilation support and thereby improve the quality of life of patients.
